Leatherdale Donates $500,000 to Convocation Hall Restoration; Province Provides Additional $5.2 Million to Make Wesley Hall A Sustainable Heritage Building The University of Winnipeg will complete an historic renovation of its signature building, Wesley Hall - making it one of the most sustainable heritage buildings in the country - thanks to a total of $5.7 million in funding from both a private donor and the Government of Manitoba.

The program included presentations by the students on their overseas experiences, and greetings from the founder of the internships program, Dr. Douglas Leatherdale (The Collegiate, Class of '57; Board Members, The University of Winnipeg Foundation)

Province Invests $25 Million for University of Winnipeg Capital Program
Premier Gary Doer on November 16, 2006 announced an investment of $10 million in The University of Winnipeg's capital program, making possible construction of a new University science complex which will also house the recently-announced Richardson College for the Environment. The Province also committed a further $15 million over three years as a matching fundraising contribution, with the Province contributing $1 for every $2 raised by the University.

$3.5 Million Donation to Create The Richardson College for the Environment and New Inner-City Green Space - Largest Private Gift in UWinnipeg History
Hartley Richardson, President & Chief Executive Officer, James Richardson & Sons, Limited, today announced a combined gift totaling $3.5 million from the Richardson Firm, Family, and Foundation to establish The Richardson College for the Environment at The University of Winnipeg. The new College will be on the cutting edge of environmental studies and sciences. One of the key elements of the College will be a new urban green space, an important addition to the development of downtown Winnipeg.

The University of Winnipeg Receives Unprecedented $2-million Gift from Faculty, Staff, Retirees & Chancellor
The University announced a significant boost for student awards and fellowships thanks to both a successful internal fundraising campaign and a generous gift from the University's Chancellor H. Sanford Riley. The combined gift of $2 million is the greatest show of support ever from the University's internal community and has been made in response to the internal fundraising campaign launched at the start of the academic year.

Sir Gordon Wu Donates $1 Million to The University of Winnipeg: Chinese Businessman creates International Scholarships for Chinese Students to Study in Winnipeg
Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President of The University of Winnipeg and Sir Gordon Wu, Chairman of Hopewell Holdings Ltd., announced the establishment of the Wu Chung Scholarship Fund with a gift of $1 million from the Hopewell Charitable Foundation of Hong Kong to The University of Winnipeg's Global College. The Wu Chung Scholarship Fund recognizes the academic achievements and leadership potential of outstanding students from Huadu, in the region of Guangzhou, China.

UWinnipeg names Global College Dean, Announces $80,000 Peace Education Fund for Immigrants/War-Affected Refugees
President Axworthy announced the appointment of Dr. James Christie as the inaugural Dean of the University's Global College and the establishment of a new $80,000 Norman J. and Gwen Axworthy Peace Education Fund, dedicated to the support of immigrants and war-affected refugees, enabling them to apply for financial assistance to support participation in University of Winnipeg courses or programs.

University & Community Partnership in Action; Wii Chiwaakanak Learning Centre Opens Doors
Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre was officially opened with the University and its Foundation announcing a pledge of $100,000 from The North West Company and corporate support of $300,000 from the RBC Financial Group. These funds enhance the Winnipeg Partnership Agreement grant of $295,000 announced April 25, 2005. Wii Chiiwaakanak is a collaborative effort between the University, the Southeast Resource Development Corporation Council, the Winnipeg Partnership Agreement, and a growing number of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit groups and organizations.

Collegiate Alumnus Pledges $1 Million to Alma Mater
University of Winnipeg Foundation on April 26, 2005 announced a major contribution by James (Jim) D. MacDonald, local business leader and University of Winnipeg Collegiate alumnus, in the form of an unprecedented pledge of $1 Million to The University of Winnipeg Collegiate. This lead gift supports the Deans Bursary Fund in memory of Lorne Tomlinson.

On April 26, 2005 at a news conference on campus, The University of Winnipeg Foundation announced that Bob Kozminski, President and CEO of Winnipeg's Keystone Ford and University of Winnipeg Alumnus, will chair The University of Winnipeg Campaign.

The Dr. Douglas W. Leatherdale Global College Internship Fund Established
The University launched its new Global College on February 7, 2005 and announced a $.5M gift establishing the Dr. Douglas W. Leatherdale Global College Internship Fund. The College will focus on issues of global significance affecting our local and international communities. Dr. Leatherdale's Internship Program will enable students to earn academic credits while studying on exchange programs, broadening their perspective of world issues.

University Opens New Aboriginal Student Services Centre
On November 12, 2004, The University's new Aboriginal Student Services Centre (ASSC) opened as part of a strategic plan to better meet the needs of Aboriginal students. This project was made possible by gifts from CIBC and The University of Winnipeg Students' Association (UWSA) and a gift from Honor de Pencier.

Announcing The Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Program
On October 8, 2004, the Carol Shields Family dedicated Larry's Bench on The University of Winnipeg campus, and as a tribute to Carol Shields, donated $100,000 towards the new Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Program. Daughter Catherine Shields and her family were on hand during the unveiling of the bench.

Prominent Canadian author Margaret Sweatman has been named as the first University of Winnipeg Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence. University President Lloyd Axworthy made the announcement on February 22, 2005 at a Toronto reception at the offices of Random House (Carol's publisher). Special guests Don Shields and Meg Shields, Foundation President Susan Thompson, alumni, and friends attended.

Generous Gifts Build the Bernice Blazewicz Pitcairn Learning Commons
On October 29, 2003, John R. Pitcairn opened the Bernice Blazewicz Pitcairn Learning Commons as a tribute to Bernice Blazewicz Pitcairn, 1929-2001. The Bernice Blazewicz Pitcairn Learning Commons provides students with study space, computing resources, and media equipment.
