Announcing the Global College and $.5 M Global College Student Internships

On February 7, 2005, The University of Winnipeg launched its Global College, attracting some of world's brightest ambassadors, academics, and human rights advocates to serve as Advisors for the new institution.

The Global College provides students, faculty, visiting scholars, dignitaries, and the community with a place to interact, to meet, to work, and to share their diverse perspectives. The new College will focus on issues of global significance affecting our local and international communities.

Announced on February 7 in conjunction with the launch was the establishment of the Dr. Douglas W. Leatherdale Global Citizen Internship Fund with a donation of $500,000 from University of Winnipeg Foundation Director Dr. Douglas W. Leatherdale (United College), Class of '57. This new endowed fund represents a significant and student-focused initiative of the University's new Global College.

In making the announcement, Dr. Axworthy observed, “The Leatherdale Internships, the first major donation to the Global College, offer students the promise of international experience and understanding together with academic credit for study away from home.”

Through the new Leatherdale Fund, up to five students each year will awarded an internship aimed at broadening student horizons and building world citizens. The program features an exchange for qualifying students for periods of six weeks to three months.

The Dr. Douglas W. Leatherdale Global Citizen Internship Fund will support programs of study that generally mirror The University of Winnipeg's Global Institutes in Human Rights and Global Studies, Public Health and Human Security, and Water and Climate Studies related to environmental change.

This $500,000 commitment to create Global Citizen Internships marks the second major financial contribution made by Dr. Leatherdale in support of The University of Winnipeg. He earlier created an endowed Scholarship Fund in memory of this father Walter Leatherdale. At more than $1 million, The Walter Leatherdale Scholarship represents one of the University's most significant endowments.
