At the unveiling of Larry’s Bench in the University Quad October 8, honouring the late Carol Shields, The University of Winnipeg announced the establishment of The Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Program with a gift of $100,000 from the Shields family.
The Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Program brings an established writer to The University of Winnipeg to act as a mentor for emerging student and community writers. In addition to devoting time to his or her own creative works, the Writer-in-Residence helps writers with their manuscripts, meets with students and the public, organizes reading series, seminars and lectures, and also performs public readings of his or her own work.
“Carol was enormously committed to cultivating young writers. Through the thoughtfulness and generosity the Shields family has shown to the University, opportunities have been created for many more people and emerging writers to discover their creative voices,” Axworthy said.
Susan Thompson, President and CEO of The University of Winnipeg Foundation, thanked the Shields family for their “wonderful legacy” for our University. “Carol’s commitment to helping other writers, reading manuscripts, and listening to and supporting students never wavered,” Thompson said. “How rewarding it will be to celebrate the accomplishments of new writers thanks to The Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Program.
