The University of Winnipeg Opportunity Fund
A vision of opportunity for all
The University of Winnipeg Opportunity Fund is an innovative initiative of 'A World of Opportunity' Capital Campaign that will help make it possible for children, youth, and adults to dream big, to aspire to a better future for themselves and ultimately for their families and their communities, and to gain access to the resources and support they need to achieve a university education.
The goal of the University is to build a $10 million Opportunity Fund that will help ensure that everyone, regardless of background and socio-economic status, has access and opportunity to gain higher education through The University of Winnipeg. In particular, the Opportunity Fund opens a door of possibilities to youth from inner-city neighbourhoods, Aboriginal students, and young people from war-affected nations and refugee populations.
The University of Winnipeg Opportunity Fund provides a comprehensive approach for student groups under-represented at the university level, including:
- “a tap on the shoulder” for students who show academic promise, in the form of Opportunity Fund Tuition Credits earned as early as Grade 4, with up to $4,000 in total tuition support
- Opportunity Fund Fast Track Bursaries for tuition fees as well as for emergency childcare, food, and shelter
- and development of healthier communities through Community Capacity Building
- an integrated approach, supported by
- enhanced learning through The University of Winnipeg's Innovative Learning Centre and its Eco-Kids and Enviro Techs programs for younger children, focusing on science, environment, and traditional Indigenous knowledge.
- a Transition-Year Program for entry-level students, providing the support they need to succeed
- Aboriginal Students Services Centre (ASSC), providing a resource area and campus meeting place for Aboriginal students, and
- the Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre
